PRESS RELEASE
WDC-34-2020
10 DECEMBER 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) and the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. co-hosted a webinar entitled, “Stop Domestic Violence” in line with the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2020.

Observed from 25 November to 12 December, the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women is an advocacy campaign that is observed annually as mandated by Proclamation 1172 s. 2006 in the Philippines.

“Let us be resolved in our commitment to stopping domestic violence and ending the violation of the rights and dignity of anyone who is forced to endure such experience. We must do our part in ensuring that all of us, regardless of gender, ethnicity, social status, and creed, live in a world free of discrimination and violence”, said Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez during his video-recorded opening remarks.

In his remarks, FYLPRO President Joshua Ang Price imparted his personal story of surviving domestic violence as a child, and expressed hope that the discussion would “help women in similar situations find the courage and resources to get out of those and find themselves in a better place.”

Christine Lee, an Emmy-nominated storyteller with over 10 years of professional work experience as a TV journalist, shared her experience as a domestic violence survivor, and identified warning signs of violence within intimate relationships. Christine continues her advocacy as the President and CEO of Kimbop TV LLC – a storytelling brand that talks about business and empowering her fellow survivors of domestic violence.

“Shame and stigma discourage so many people from telling anybody about what they are experiencing. But I think events like this help to dispel that sense of shame and let people know it’s okay and that they are not alone,” she said during her presentation.

Joyce King, Chief Counsel at the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office and FYLPRO alumna, focused on the fundamental rights of domestic violence victims, regardless of their immigration and citizenship status, and what they should expect when seeking legal assistance.

While navigating the U.S. justice system can be very overwhelming, Joyce emphasized that resorting to legal means, such as obtaining a protective order, is one of the most effective ways to save a victim’s life.

Anajay Jayme, a California-licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a founding partner of Bridges to Healing Counseling and Training Center, presented on prevention strategies, resources for survivors, and what allies can do to better support survivors, especially in the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities where domestic violence is typically not openly discussed.

The event was moderated by Dr. Joyce Javier, an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and a Senior Advisor for FYLPRO’s Caretaker Project. FYLPRO’s COVID-19 Task Force developed the Caretaker Project in response to the ongoing pandemic and to tackle the specific needs of Filipinos in the diaspora and back home. The project features a virtual help desk, Tayo Help, which contains a list of resources and information on domestic violence.

“Stop Domestic Violence” is accessible on the Embassy’s Facebook page and questions for the panelists may be anonymously submitted to info@phembassy-us.org. Please call 911 if a life-threatening situation arises from domestic violence. If you or anyone you know is experiencing domestic violence and would like to seek the Philippine Embassy’s assistance, you may call our Assistance-to-Nationals and Violence Against Women hotline (VAW) at +1 202 769 8049 or send an email to atn@phembassy-us.org.

Chicago alumni’s drive-in movie fundraiser raised spirits for FAHM

Kicking off Filipino American History Month, FYLPRO alumni of Chicago and Asian Pop-Up Cinema on Oct. 3 raised more than $3,000 as they treated COVID-19 frontliners to a drive-in movie for the U.S. Premiere of the movie Edward.

Directed by Thop Nazareno, “Edward” is a coming of age story of a young boy stuck in a public hospital with no one else to take care of his ailing father. Caught in a place where life itself is in limbo, the boy’s careless attitude reaches a screening halt when he experiences a bittersweet incident that pushes his life into transition and will make him a man amidst chaos and heartbreaking loss.

FYLPRO celebrates national holiday encouraging voter registration for the 2020 Elections

September 21, 2020  – On September 22, 2020, thousands of national, state, and local organizations and volunteers will be celebrating National Voter Registration Day 2020,  a massive cross-country effort to register voters well in advance of Election Day this November. The Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) is proud to join this movement as an official partner.

In 2018, voter turnout increased among non-Hispanic Asians by 13 percentage points, a 49 percent increase. This year, more than 11 million Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders (AAPI) will be able to vote, making up nearly 5% of the nation’s eligible voters. Unfortunately, one of the biggest barriers to AAPI civic participation is voter registration.

“This National Voter Registration Day, we’re doing our part to get eligible voters registered,” said FYLPRO President and Pulaski County Election Commissioner Joshua Ang Price. “No person should be denied their right to vote due to barriers they may experience with registration or any other aspect of the voting process. We hope that this special day dedicated to answering questions related to voter registration and supporting community members to register to vote will help get them to the polls.”

According to the 2020 Asian American Voter Survey, Filipino Americans in particular are the most enthusiastic about voting in the upcoming election compared to other Asian American groups.

“Getting enthusiastic and registered to vote is step one in making a plan to vote. On National Voter Registration Day we’re encouraging voters to solidify their voting plans and to support their friends, families, and community who may not already be familiar with the process.” says FYLPRO Board Member and NaFFAA Fil-Am Vote Manager, Krystle Canare.

On September 22, FYLPRO will encourage eligible voters from across the country to register to vote at the following virtual events:

Founded in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote. Nearly 3 million Americans have registered to vote on the holiday since the inaugural National Voter Registration Day in 2012.

FYLPRO is proud to partner with the following Get Out the Vote initiatives gearing up for the Elections:

Filipino Young Leaders Program Awarded Booz Allen Foundation Innovation Fund Grant

Filipino Young Leaders Program Awarded Booz Allen Foundation Innovation Fund Grant

Caretaker Project selected to receive funding for innovative solution to pressing issue caused by COVID-19 pandemic

September 17, 2020: The Booz Allen Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to convening diverse stakeholders to solve challenging social issues, today announced the recipients of nearly $1 million in grants from the Booz Allen Foundation Innovation Fund.

The Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) was selected to receive a grant ($25,000) for its groundbreaking proposal – the Caretaker Project.

Established to support the development of creative solutions that address the wide-ranging impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Booz Allen Foundation Innovation Fund was open to individuals, nonprofit organizations, and eligible small businesses to apply from April 30 to June 5, 2020. Nearly 3,000 applications were submitted, coming from all 50 states, four U.S. territories, and Washington, DC.

“We are excited and honored to receive this generous grant from the Booz Allen Foundation to launch our Caretaker Project to provide vital services to our kababayans during COVID-19,” said FYLPRO President Joshua Ang Price. “This grant is absolutely huge for FYLPRO and the Fil-Am communities we serve, which is a population prone to service gaps and misinformation. Our COVID-19 Task Force envisioned this project as a way to help fill those gaps and address the unique needs of our communities as we all weather this pandemic together.”

The 21 winners—including FYLPRO—selected to receive grant funding are each working to develop new solutions, systems, technology, and approaches that help build lasting community resilience by protecting vulnerable populations and frontline workers or support the safe return to work.

“In this unprecedented time, we asked applicants to provide their best and brightest ideas to solve the most pressing issues caused by the pandemic—and help those vulnerable populations most impacted,” said John M. Murdock, President and co-founding board member of the Booz Allen Foundation. “The Booz Allen Foundation is honored to provide funding to a diverse set of winning teams developing high impact solutions that will not only change the world, but also provide hope.”

The Caretaker Project will be launched as a virtual help desk to connect Filipinos with vital, culturally relevant services such as wellness resources and legal assistance; debunk misinformation and warn against fraud and scams; and improve collection of data to better serve the community. This project aims to fill gaps in services for the most vulnerable social groups — seniors, frontline workers, and the unemployed. The anticipated rollout will take place in October 2020 through a proprietary web-based platform, Tayo, with initial focus on the Los Angeles area.

The Caretaker Project was developed by FYLPRO’s COVID-19 Task Force, which is chaired by FYLPRO board member, program director, and spokesperson Leezel Tanglao. Project leadership also includes FYLPRO board member Tiffany Batac, who serves as project manager, as well as product manager Dexter Ligot-Gordon, project operations coordinator Pia Besmonte and product designer Jiggy Villanueva, all of whom lend their talents from Kalibrr, Southeast Asia’s highest rated job search application. FYLPRO board members Joshua Ang Price, Krystle Canare, Melissa Palma, Donny Rojo, TJ Simba-Medel, and FYLPRO alumni Mark Calaguas, Frederick Docdocil, and Ireneo Reus III round out the Caretaker Project team.

Innovation Fund grant applications were reviewed by over 150 individuals during a multi-tiered evaluation process. From 3,000 applications, 30 semi-finalists were selected to virtually pitch their projects to a team of external evaluators with backgrounds in innovation, grant making, and entrepreneurship. The 21 winning teams were then evaluated and approved by the Booz Allen Foundation Board.

More information on FYLPRO and the Caretaker Project is available at fylpro.org.

60 Bamboo Beds For Philippine COVID-19 Patients Built and Delivered Through FYLPRO-Funded Project

On June 25, 2020, the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO), through its COVID-19 Relief Fund, awarded $2,000 to Kawayan Collective, a Philippines-based workers cooperative that collects, treats, and sells construction-grade bamboo. The funds helped double Kawayan Collective’s COVID-19 response capacity, resulting in the manufacture of a total of 60 beds for coronavirus patients in the central Visayas region. The beds were delivered to Dumaguete, Negros Oriental for two separate quarantine facilities which have been immediately put to use as authorities in Metro Manila have encouraged all those who can safely do so to return to their homes in the provinces.

“Thanks to FYLPRO’s (support), we were able to donate an additional 30 beds, which will be split between the next two major towns of Negros Oriental, Bayawan and Bais City,” said FYLPRO alumnus Ray Villanueva, who co-founded Kawayan Collective in 2017. “Now, we are notifying the towns that have had to close their doors due to lack of quarantine facilities of the availability of locally-made bamboo beds in their efforts to help people safely quarantine to reduce transmission.”

Four days a week “sweeper” flights have been helping to shuttle stranded individuals back to the province, and if they do not have the money to pay for two weeks private quarantine at an approved hotel, they can avail of the government facilities with bamboo beds, according to Villanueva.
